THERE IS A FOUNTAIN
There is a fountain filled with blood/Drawn from Immanuel's veins/And sinners
plunged beneath that flood/Lose all their guilty stains! That old hymn speaks volumes
concerning the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. However, there are people in our era who
find the gospel and the Bible and hymns like the one here quoted to be repugnant and
choose to reject both because of the mention of bloodshed.
Yet that is God's plan formulated in eternity past. Long ago He spoke to Moses in Leviticus 17:11 and told him, " For it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul." The question may be asked from whence must this blood come? Once again the Word of God reveals the answer to us. The author of the epistle to the Hebrews writes, "For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins" (Hebrews 10:4). On the other hand the apostle Peter writes, "Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot" (1 Peter 1:18, 19).
The apostle Paul also writes of the efficacy of the blood of Jesus, "But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been made near by the blood of Christ" (Ephesians 2:13). Furthermore, Paul writes in the epistle to the Romans, "Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him" (Romans 5:9).
The Word of God bears testimony to the truthfulness of the words of the old hymn quoted above. Redemption is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, not through the bones of "saints". Purging of our sins is accomplished by the person of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:3) rather than in a place. Wouldn't you accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord today and have the complete assurance that is promised in 1 John 5:13.
